Virginia State defeats Winston Salem State to remain undefeated in CIAA action

In a nationally broadcast game Thursday night, Virginia State defeated Winston Salem State 66-52 to stay undefeated in CIAA play.

In a game aired on HBCU GO as part of a doubleheader involving the men’s and women’s teams, the Trojans advanced to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA, while WSSU dropped to 10-3 and 2-2 in conference play.

Terrence Hunter-Whitefield led the way for Virginia State with 24 points, while Zach Newkirk and Francis Fitzgerald each had 13.

The Rams were led by Jaylen Alston (16 points), Jaylon Gibson (9 points), and Jermey Dixon (8 points). DyQuavis Wilkins chipped in with seven points.

The Trojans scored 26-6 to start the contest. With 7:31 remaining in the first half, Jon Hicklin made a layup to make the score 26-8. The Rams got a few defensive stops and headed into halftime only down by ten points, 33-22.

VSU scored six goals in the first six minutes of the second half. With 11:24 left in the game, VSU extended their advantage to 22. With 8:06 remaining in the contest, Jeremy Dixon made back-to-back three-pointers to cut VSU’s advantage to 53-36.

With 3:26 remaining, the Rams trailed by 13, 57-44, thanks to a fast turnover and a recovery by Samage Teel.
