Ed Reed will not be the next head coach at Bethune-Cookman, according to Reggie Theus.

Reed’s Instagram Live broadcasts — and the criticism in them — surprised Theus in an interview with HBCU Gameday.

“I was completely shocked and appalled by the behavior,” Theus stated. “It’s sad because it’s so much bigger than Ed Reed.”

Reed, according to Theus, has “no chance” of returning to the program as a coach as a result of his conduct, despite pleas from B-CU players and Reed himself. “We gave him a chance at his first head coaching job at Bethune-Cookman, and he disappointed us,” Theus said.

On December 27, the school agreed in principle to designate Reed coach after Terry Sims was sacked midway through the 2022 season. Theus stated that the school desired a coach who would develop the program. Reed, according to the athletic director, was deemed to meet those requirements.

“Back when we changed football coaches, I spoke with the administration. ‘Listen, there’s no need for us to make a change unless we’re going to place a fresh emphasis on strengthening our football program,’ I remarked. To me, Ed was a part of the overall development of the football program.”

Reed, according to Theus, became engaged in the inner workings of the program almost soon after the two sides agreed on an agreement, including recruiting and awarding scholarships to high school players.

Everything looked to be well until Reed came in a series of videos in which he aired his dissatisfaction with the B-CU administration and HBCU leadership. He also stated that his workplace was filthy when he arrived.

The profanity-laced remarks sounded like a coach who had no idea what he was getting himself into. However, Theus, who also serves as the men’s basketball coach, stated that this was not the case.

“Ed was fully aware of our situation at Bethune-Cookman,” he explained. “I showed him everything that was good about the program as well as everything that was bad.” His workplace was spotless. It just wasn’t clean enough for him. He didn’t work here, as he mentioned when he mentioned the office. He hadn’t signed the contract yet. I hadn’t done any cleaning because the previous instructors had just recently departed the building.

Bethune-Cookman On Roland Martin Unfiltered, President Lawrence Drake stated that the office was not yet fully operational since the building where it was situated was being renovated.

Theus stated: “When he started talking about our administration, our board of trustees, and our president, he was out of line. I’ve watched from my place, being new here, the work we’ve put in over even the last two years since I’ve been here as the athletic director and basketball coach.” “The fact that they even considered hiring me as the athletic director shows that they are thinking outside the box and attempting to do something more,” the applicant said.

Following the tapes, Theus said that Reed’s relationship had degenerated. Drake also stated that the school’s alumni and corporate partners had enquired about the reaction.

Theus remarked, “I attempted to make Ed see that this was not heading in the direction he intended. I attempted to explain to him throughout the chat that what he did in that outburst and the subsequent videos was ineffective.

Theus, on the other hand, made no mention of the current player and student demonstrations over Reed’s firing or campus circumstances.

According to him, a nationwide search for a new coach is now underway.
