On Saturday, Dec. 17, the mood was upbeat and festive at the 4th Street Saloon, and not just because the Vikings’ historic comeback victory over the Colts was playing in the background. To the delight of the children, a pair of Santa Clauses arrived on the scene to fulfil their wishes. The “Northside Santa Toy & Food Giveaway,” which was made possible by patron donations and community partnerships, transformed the bar into a family-friendly hangout.
The saloon had a White Santa Claus, Mike Oker, and a Black Santa Claus, artist Charles Caldwell, this year. Both Santas assisted in toy shopping with the help of volunteers. “I enjoy the giving aspect of Christmas because it is better to give than to receive,” Caldwell said. “I’m thankful for all the sponsors and support that went into this event. The 4th Street Saloon will host this event on an annual basis.
Caldwell continued, “The saloon gave away toys to the kids valued over $10,000 but didn’t have enough. “Hopefully, they will be able to add more sponsors and partners for this event the following year, making it the delightful experience that North Minneapolis deserves. We do have elders’ and children’s needs in mind.
“Our Northside students are the most valuable resource we have,” Oker continued. We must serve as the community. I adore how everyone joined together to provide food, toys, and entertainment for the Northside kids. We came to assist because “We helped save people’s Christmases and came to be nice to others,” said Akir Norris, a young volunteer for the event. Christmas is a time to celebrate with family and friends, to be kind to others, and to have joy.
