The NBA X HBCU Stream of the Miami Heat vs. New Orleans Pelicans game will be hosted by Morehouse College senior Miles Johnson and Spelman College junior Zoria McClerklin on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. CT.

Johnson was recently seen on the NBA MLK Day telecast during the Atlanta Hawks’ 121-113 win over the Miami Heat. He was the young sideline reporter following veteran TNT reporter Chris Haynes and questioning head coach Nate McMillan.

Miles, the Maroon Tiger editor at Morehouse, conveyed his appreciation for hosting tonight’s gathering. “This is my third time participating in the NBA X HBCU Stream,” Johnson explained. “It’s an honor to now co-host the broadcast with my Spelman sister Zoria McClerklin.”

Johnson told me that the NBA producers and director gave him and McClerklin complete control over the broadcast’s substance and production. “We’re doing it using software similar to Zoom to broadcast the game.” We’ll be online in a couple of hours after a pre-soundcheck.”

In recent years, the National Basketball Association has provided prospective HBCU correspondents and authors with the required exposure during games. Miles praised former Morehouse College graduate Corey Guy with including him in his first NBA X HBCU streaming shows. Guy was the first Sekou Smith Memorial Intern, created after the death of longtime Turner Sports NBA reporter and HBCU graduate Sekou Smith.

Johnson praised his teachers, Reggie Miller, Chris Haynes, and fellow Morehouse sibling Keion Grissom, with providing the “opportunity and the hope that it will become an annual event.”
Congratulations to the NBA for providing opportunities for HBCU students like McClerkin and Miles to gain experience and demonstrate their abilities in reporting professional basketball. It’s a useful and motivating lesson for aspiring HBCU sports writers.
