After having their 34-game conference win run broken this past Saturday, the Jackson State women returned to the win column with an 87-58 victory over Texas Southern.

Daphane White, the Tigers’ senior center, led the team with 13 points and 12 boards, her first double-double of the season. She was one of four Jackson State players to reach double digits, joining forward Angel Jackson, who had 13 points, eight rebounds, and three rejections off the bench.

Meanwhile, sophomore guard Adriana Avent led all scorers for Texas Southern with 21 points, followed by Taniya Lawson with 13 points and six boards.

After a tight first quarter, Jackson State flipped the script entirely in the second quarter, outscoring Texas Southern 24-7.

Jariyah Covington of Jackson State was on fire in the first half, netting all 11 of her points, including three three-pointers.

In contrast, Texas Southern labored with their shot in the first half, converting only 7-of-33 tries.

Another factor in Jackson State’s victory was their ability to score off mistakes, as they converted 31 points off giveaways compared to just six points for Texas Southern.

With the victory, Jackson State moved to 4-1 in the league and 7-8 overall. They are now tied for first position in the SWAC with Southern, Prairie View A&M, and Alabama A&M.

Texas Southern is now 1-5 in league and 1-15 overall, their worst start since the 2011-2012 season.
