Octavia Spencer travelled from Alabama to California as a young lady with $3,000, a 48-inch TV, a suitcase, and “a heart full of dreams.” Another of her goals was realized a quarter-century later when she got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“To be forever cemented in the mythology of this city and the film industry is an incredible honor,” the 52-year-old said in her speech at the Dec. 8 event. “It took me a minute to comprehend the gravity of the situation.”

“The culmination of my dreams realized, hard work rewarded after a fair but healthy amount of failure and rejection,” she added.

Spencer, of “The Help” and “Hidden Figures” renown, gave an emotional address in which she praised “her tribe,” those who cheered her on through both triumphs and setbacks, and those who otherwise assisted her in pursuing her Hollywood goals.

“If you happen to come across my star, remember all the names I just mentioned even if mine is the only one you see,” she said. “My village, the people I just named today.” They are only a few of the individuals who help me behind the scenes. This was not a solitary accomplishment for me; it required my family, tribe, and town. And I appreciate it.”

Spencer’s birthday was celebrated by actors/actresses Viola Davis, with whom she co-starred in “The Help,” Davis’ spouse, actor Julius Tennon, Mekhi Phifer, Will Ferrell, and Allison Janey. Spencer’s alma school, Auburn University, even sent a mascot to commemorate the event.

Spencer subsequently documented her special day on Instagram, thanking friends and others for their support. She also encouraged other visionaries like her, “those at a crossroads in your life and career.”

“Pick something that will bring you boundless joy,” she suggested. “It took me 15 years to become an overnight success, and the rest, as they say, is history.” When preparedness meets chance, success occurs. Take the time to plan for YOUR chance. Good luck, my pals.”
