The Haitian Times’ Year in Pictures
Leonardo March / On the 12th anniversary of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti, a group met in Prospect Park in January to commemorate the deceased. The yearly lighting vigil attempted to remember the lives lost when the earth shook in Port-au-Prince, which were believed to be between 250,000 and 316,000. Participants in the memorial observed a minute of quiet at 4:53 p.m., the time the ground shook.

Many of our favourite pictures from the Haitian diaspora are featured in the Haitian Times’ “Year in Photos.” We purposefully avoided some of the more gruesome and distressing pictures that emerged from Haiti this year, instead focusing on glimpses from our communities that, while not salacious or startling, are nonetheless worth spotlighting.

From vibrant cultural events to heartwarming times with loved ones, these pictures depict the Haitian people’s resilience and delight. We hope that by sharing these pictures, we can highlight the beauty and strength of the Haitian community and inform our viewers of the many positive aspects of this dynamic and varied people.
